And imagine the stress on your eyes when you have to strain them see what is on your screen.
Laptops have what is called an LCD screen, which translates to Liquid Crystal Display. LCD screens are fragile and should be cleaned with extra care or risk permanent damage, such as white/yellow stains and scratches. One way to avoid damaging your monitors is to never put your fingers on the LCD screen as this can burn out pixels.
It is perfectly fine to leave the monitor on during the cleaning process but if you turn it off you will be able to see the smears and smudges much better.
Always use a very SOFT COTTON cloth when cleaning LCD screens or electrostatic cloths, such as, those used for cleaning eyeglasses. An old soft cotton t-shirt works very well. Never use paper towels, rags, towels, napkins or toilet paper as they may scratch the surface.
Dry Dusting of LCD Screens:
If your monitor is not too dirty you can use the cotton cloth for dry dusting. Another great trick for dusting laptop screens is using dryer sheets, which naturally attract dust and work just perfectly for cleaning LCD screens. Gently wipe (without applying any pressure) the screen in one direction starting at
the top and working your way down.

Deep Cleaning LCD Screens with a Homemade Solution:
The ingredients needed are Isopropyl Alcohol (and only isopropyl alcohol will do)and Distilled Water. Do not use tap water because it contains salts that can whiten your screen and ruin it.
Cleaning Solution Recipe:
Mix equal parts distilled water to isopropyl alcohol. For example mix 1/2 cup water to 1/2 cup isopropyl alcohol.
Never pour or spray any cleaning solutions directly onto LCD screens as this can short circuit your monitor. Apply a very small amount of the solution ONTO THE CLOTH (make sure to use that same soft all cotton cloth as mentioned previously) and very gently (without pressure) wipe the screen in one direction from the top of the screen to the bottom. That is all folks!
